Application

An optical ground wire is a type of cable used in the building of electrical power transmission and distribution lines. It is also referred to as an OPGW or, in the IEEE standard, an optical fiber composite overhead ground wire.
This OPGW cable combines the communication and grounding functions. One or more optical fibers are contained in a tubular structure called an OPGW cable, which is encased in layers of steel and aluminum wire.Between the tops of high-voltage electrical pylons, the OPGW cable is laid. The conductive portion of the cable protects the high-voltage conductors from lightning strikes and bonds nearby towers to the soil.
The optical fibers in the cable can be used for high-speed data transmission, either for the electrical utility's own voice and data communication as well as for the utility's own protection.

Construction

The central stainless steel tube is surrounded by double layers of aluminium clad steel wires(ACS),the inner layer aluminium clad steel wires are compressed, the outer layer aluminium clad steel wires are all compressed or all round.

Main feature

As a communication medium, OPGW has some advantages over buried optical cables. Installation costs per kilometer are lower than buried cables. Effectively, the optical circuit is protected from accidental contact by the high voltage cables below (and the height of the OPGW above the ground). Communication circuits carried by overhead OPGW cables benefit from a lower likelihood of accidental damage from excavation work such as road extensions or any type of repair work on underground drainage or water systems.
High tensile strength.
Optimal balance of mechanical and electrical properties.
Suitable for optical cable communication system.
