The principal applications for OPGW optical fiber ground wire are in 500KV, 220KV, and 110KV power lines. They are usually used on new lines and are impacted by things like power outages, safety, and other things. The OPGW properties that apply are:
Large span (often exceeding 250M) is present in high voltage cables over 110kV.
It is simple to maintain and has an easy solution for the line crossing issue. Its mechanical properties can accommodate the line's wide spread.
Metal armor serves as the outermost layer of the OPGW and has no bearing on high voltage corrosion and degradation.
OPGW Optical Fiber Ground Wire has two constructions:
Central loose tube type
A central aluminum tube that is sealed and water resistant and filled with water-blocking gel contains the fibers loosely. Under harsh environmental circumstances, this tube protects the fiber during installation and operation. Depending on the engineering needs, the stainless steel tube could alternatively be steel with an aluminum coating. At the heart of the cable is a stainless optical tube that is shielded by one or more layers of aluminum-clad steel, aluminum alloy wires, or steel wires. The metallic wires have conductivity to reduce temperature rise in short circuit settings and mechanical strength to survive difficult installation and operating conditions.
Each optical fiber is clearly distinguishable utilizing a fiber identification system consisting of coloring and the number of ring marks on it. This compact design features high mechanical strength and fault current rating within a smaller diameter. The smaller diameter also results in excellent sag tension performance.
Multi loose tube type
A sealed, water-resistant stainless steel tube containing water-blocking gel and the fibers is filled with the latter. The inner layer of a multi-layer cable has two or three helically stranded stainless steel optical tubes. The multi loose tube type is intended primarily for applications requiring very high fiber counts greater than 48, with a maximum fiber count of 144. The multi-loose tube type can accommodate the need for a significant cross and current capacity.
The optical fiber is made of high pure silica and germanium doped silica. UV curable acrylate material is applied over fiber cladding as optical fiber primary protective coating. The detail data of optical fiber performance are shown in the following table.
