In addition to spacer cables, tree wires or tree-friendly wires are used in areas with heavy vegetation growth or where trees are located near power lines.
Tree wires consist of a central bare conductor surrounded by insulation and an outer conductor with a series of AAAC conductor. The outer conductor is designed to bend and move with the branches without harming the tree or causing damage to the power cord. Increased installation clearance for tree wires helps prevent trees from touching power lines and causing power outages. They are often used in residential and urban areas where trees are common.
All-aluminum alloy conductor in a single cable with a 2-layer covering, a 3-layer extruded shield, and a shield made of semiconducting thermoplastic conductor that has been extruded.
LDPE, MDPE, or HDPE makes up the covering inner layer, while track-resistant medium- or high-density polyethylene (TK-MDPE or TK-HDPE) makes up the outer layer.
Each layer is joined by a bond.
Conductor:
AAC (1350-H19, compact stranded).
Conductor Shield:
Extruded semiconducting thermoplastic shield which is free stripping from the conductor and bonded to the covering.
Inner and Outer Covering:
2-layer LDPE, MDPE or HDPE, where the outer layer is track-resistant (TK-MDPE or TK-HDPE).
These cables are manufactured and tested to meet or exceed the following standards:
ASTM B230 – Aluminum 1350–H19 Wire for Electrical Purposes
ASTM B231 – Concentric-Lay-Stranded Aluminum 1350 Conductors
ASTM B400 – Compact Round Concentric-Lay-Stranded Conductors
ASTM D1248 – Polyethylene Plastics Extrusion Materials for Wire and Cable
ICEA S-121-733 – Tree Wire and Messenger Supported Spacer Cable
